Live Life Through Liberal Education
“Jack of all traits master of none”, this is the description of many when asked about a Liberal Arts student or graduate.

As observed, 18-year old individuals who are in college for enrollment and have not decided what to specialize in usually end up in the Liberal Arts Department. For some, it is not a wise choice. Yes, this thinking may even run in the student’s mind for he thought his choice was just for the sake of studying on something. This is very wrong. Liberal Arts education will prove you erroneous.

In this world of change, people change career paths for numerous of times. Many tries to go up and down a certain field but mostly start with different fields along the way. Liberal Arts education is a form of education which prepares an individual to have background in almost all fields. With liberal education, you do not have to dwell on field solely. You grow with the will to face almost any kind of person because Liberal education molded them into a well-rounded person.

When one looks for a job, current day employers look for an employee who has good communication skills and who could deal with different people. It means one must have good intrapersonal skills. They want people who have background in various areas and who could solve pressures with poise. These characteristics belong to someone from the Liberal Arts arena. According to an educator, liberal arts will teach you how to learn.

With other fields of education, they mainly focus their studies in a fixed area of specialization. For the Liberal Arts education, one has a bit of all fields. This polishes an individual to become open-minded and not just learned. Being open-minded would mean flexibility to the changes of the current times. Moreover, one’s acceptance and ability to deal with these changes could only be achieved through a holistic education. Liberal education comes in. Through this, an individual sees the truth beyond the entertainment of dances, the innovations of medicine and the techniques of teaching.

Education goes beneath the classrooms toward the real world after graduation. Liberal education’s foundation will lead one to the rooms on top. You may not be a nurse nor an architect- but you are a real man.

After all, it is not preparing an individual for the Accountant’s Examination, Licensure Examination for Professionals and so on… Liberal Education is preparing you for life.

How Music Benefits Education

Music is the best discovery of man. As one of the highest forms of expression, man was able to turn to music as his form of catharsis. Songs were written out of the deepest feelings and the best thoughts about life and love.

Music is appreciated by people from all walks of life and all ages. By all ages, it means adults and kids alike. The benefits of music for adults are obvious. For kids, there are numerous special benefits of music and learning different instruments. At an early age, there are children who manifest great interest and talent when it comes to music. However, it does not mean that those who only show early interests are the only ones who must learn and enjoy the benefits.

• Music education and learning how to play musical instruments develop the child’s left side of the brain which is involved in the processing of language. Also, it nurtures the child’s spatial intelligence since there is a link between music and this kind of intelligence. This intelligence is about identifying things that may come together up to solving mathematical problems.

• Music as a form of Art really helps kids grow up with creativity. Through art, they could think in all aspects and not merely search for one concrete answer. This is where critical-thinking starts. There is also one study that shows how much it could help students develop special academic skills. The results state that kids who learn music excel in achievement tests in high school compared to those who do not.

• Through music, a child could get easily exposed to different people, different cultures. This would allow them to know, discover, explore and understand other people and other culture. This is an early training for them to be exposed to what the world is.

• Kids also get educated on how to build the craftsman in them. Moreover, in playing the instrument, mastery is a factor. That makes a mistake- really a mistake. With this, a student learns the value of consistent effort to achieve excellence or satisfaction. Learning how to play instruments in a group makes a kid learn the essence of teamwork.

• Musical instruments will teach kids to actively participate in learning than sit down and observe only. Furthermore, it will enhance his self-expression. The most important thing is that kids learn to conquer their fears, show their talents and share what they have. This is a foundation of a better growth and development in the holistic sense.

Education has the most flexible range. As much as possible it could extend its arms on every aspect that may mold a person into somebody who would be of real life, living not just for his very self. But, for the world.

How to Survive a Layoff

The recent economic downturn has many people thinking about the possibility of layoff. Unfortunately, people do not make plans in advance to ease the transition when the pink slip comes their way. Denial is not the best plan of action. A few simple ideas will enable you to survive a layoff and put you well on the road to recovery.

First, accept the fact that these things happen, and are driven by the market. It has nothing to do with you personally. A company, no matter how badly they might want to, cannot keep people on the payroll when sales are dropping with no end in sight. The quicker you get through the acceptance stage, the better things will be for you and your family.
Do not succumb to bitterness and criticize your employer. This is one bridge you cannot afford to burn because you may need them as a reference. If the employer offers a severance package that includes retraining, take it! I always find it amazing how many people complain and refuse to go back to school. Take a reality pill! The average person in today’s market place will work in up to three careers in their life time. Being adamant about staying in the same type of job you have always done is a death sentence. Be open to new careers and opportunities.
Get a resume. If you already have one, update it to reflect you last job and learning experiences. It is well worth the investment to go to a resume professional or life coach to learn how to get a job in today’s marketplace, especially if it has been a while since you went job hunting.

Take a close look at your skills and determine what you need to get retooled for the twenty-first century. Again, a good life coach or mentor is an invaluable asset. Keep an open mind and be open to new possibilities.

Change your spending habits immediately. Cut out everything that is not essential. Any severance pay you get is not a bonus. It is for living expenses to give you a buffer until unemployment and/or a new job happens. Spend it wisely and make it go as far as possible. It takes on average six months to find a new job, and with the current economic situation, even longer is a real possibility.
You should spend the same number of hours looking for a job as you did working your last job. Understand that employers will not call you, look for you, or come to your house to meet you. It requires you going to them, knocking on their door, and letting them see firsthand what you have to offer. Be sure to dress for success. Business casual is still the acceptable look.
The new order of the day is networking. Attend meetings, educate yourself on the current job market, look for opportunities to go back to school, and renew friendships with old contacts. Do not be afraid to take a temp-to-hire position. More and more companies hire temps because it is a cheaper easier way to check out a person’s performance than to hire and then terminate them. If retraining is an option, choose a field that is recession proof.

If you are facing layoff, you will need all the emotional support you can get. Enlist your family in the situation and always be clear about everyone working together to make things work. Finding a new career is a challenging process, but by using some forethought and being proactive, you should be re-employed in no time.

A Mindset to Success

Whether dealing with high school or college-aged students, one fact is not disputable.Today’s younger generation has many distractions, and many do not possess the study skills necessary to do well. And, while we can lament the fast pace of life and the lack of time to study and prepare, the reality is that we have the same amount of hours in a day that our parents and grandparents had, no more and no less. So, what has changed? Is it simply that a student needs more time to study? I submit that what he/she really needs is the ability to make better use of time and the ability to develop better skills so he/she can actually study less and make better grades. Most students will quickly assent to that proposal—Yes, I want to study less and make better grades! What thinking person would not want to buy into that strategy? Without a doubt, a better way to study should produce a better result. Furthermore, that is the problem, it is how we study. If you will simply follow the guidelines suggested here you should see an improvement in your learning ability and your resulting grades.

Setting priorities

The first rule for success with your studies involves a determination of what is most important. What do you consider important? You must recognize that success for most people involves setting priorities regarding time and resources. Remember that you and your friends all have the same amount of time to do what you want to do. The student who consistently makes good grades is no less stressed than you. He/she has the same number of hours per day as you. The difference is that they choose to spend those hours differently than others. You will find the time to do what you consider to be important to you. Determine what is important and do not let others, competing interests, or lesser goals detract from hitting your target. For many, the good may prevent your being the best. How many students allow other good things to encroach on their making the Honor Roll? While many good things always compete for your time and attention, always opt for the higher priorities over lesser ones.You and you alone, determine what is important. No one-not parents, acquaintances, or even a boy friend or girl friend, should determine your values. Young people tend to base important decisions on influences that will probably not even be in their lives in ten or twenty years. Remarkable how many life decisions are based on a boy friend or girl friend, whom you have no intention to marry, or may not even remember in ten years.

Develop Study Habits around Time and Place

Plan to study when you are most productive. For some, the morning hours before class are when your mind is most rested and able to produce the best work. For others, they function best in the afternoon or evening. Evaluate when you are most productive and schedule that time as your “study hours.” Having a consistent, scheduled time is vital for success. Use the time, whether you have pending assignments or not. If nothing is pressing use the time to review notes, read chapters, and do preliminary work on a coming class project. The discipline of having a scheduled time will mean less cramming for tests, or rushing to complete last minute assignments. The reward will be better quality work and better grades!

Where are you most productive?

While the “when” is important, the “where” determines how much work you can accomplish. Do not attempt to study in high traffic areas or public places. Avoid distractions by turning off your cell phone and TV. The idea that one studies better with “noise” or music playing says more about habit than efficiency. Although it is possible to learn despite the competition from other sources, the amount you learn is greatly diminished. Develop a work area which is conducive to study. Having a study location means it takes less time to settle in, and you can avoid wasting time looking for things you need. The discipline of when and where you study will mean more energy can be applied to study itself.

Conclusion

Effective study habits begin by setting priorities and then re-enforcing those priorities with simply disciplines like set study times and a quiet, undisturbed study location. Unfortunately, students without scheduled study times end up spending more time dreading the task than working on it. Begin now to develop the right mindset. The mindset for success begins with right thinking. You have goals and you must develop the right attitude to reach them.
